Medical Nutrition Therapy in Oklahoma City
Personalized Medical Nutrition Therapy from a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist
Food and nutrition can play an important role in managing many health conditions—but figuring out what to eat when you have a medical diagnosis can be confusing.
Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is a personalized nutrition service provided by a qualified Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) to help address specific medical conditions and nutrition-related concerns.
At Life Nutrition, I provide individualized Medical Nutrition Therapy. Rather than following a generic diet plan, your nutrition recommendations are developed around your diagnosis, laboratory values, medications, health history, nutritional needs, lifestyle, food preferences, and personal goals.
Nutrition recommendations should be as individual as you are.
What Is Medical Nutrition Therapy?
Medical Nutrition Therapy is a specialized nutrition service in which a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist evaluates your nutritional needs and develops an individualized nutrition intervention based on your medical condition and health goals.
MNT may include:
- Nutrition assessment
- Review of medical history
- Review of laboratory values
- Evaluation of dietary intake
- Nutrition diagnosis
- Individualized nutrition intervention
- Meal and food recommendations
- Education and counseling
- Goal setting
- Follow-up and monitoring
- Adjustments to your nutrition plan as your needs change
The goal is not simply to give you a list of foods to eat and avoid. The goal is to help you understand how nutrition fits into the management of your health.
Meet Your Oklahoma City Registered Dietitian Nutritionist
I’m Erin Martin, RDN/LD, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and the founder of Life Nutrition.
I’ve been a Registered Dietitian since 2009 and earned my Bachelor of Science in Human Environmental Sciences and Nutritional Sciences from Oklahoma State University.
I became a dietitian because I wanted to help people become the healthiest version of themselves and help people with disease prevention.
My approach to Medical Nutrition Therapy is personalized, practical, and evidence-based.
I believe nutrition recommendations should fit into your actual life—not require you to completely change who you are or eliminate every food you enjoy.

How Medical Nutrition Therapy Works
Step 1: Nutrition Assessment
Your first appointment begins with a comprehensive look at your individual situation. We’ll discuss:
- Your medical history
- Current diagnoses
- Medications
- Supplements
- Laboratory values
- Typical food intake
- Meal patterns
- Food preferences
- Allergies and intolerances
- Physical activity
- Sleep
- Stress
- Lifestyle
- Your nutrition goals
If you have recent laboratory results or recommendations from your healthcare provider, these can be helpful during your appointment.
Step 2: Identify Nutrition Priorities
Once we understand your health picture, we’ll identify the nutrition concerns that are most important to address.
For example, someone with prediabetes + high cholesterol + excess weight may need a different approach than someone with IBS + constipation + multiple food intolerances.
There is no one-size-fits-all MNT plan.
Step 3: Create Your Individualized Nutrition Plan
We’ll develop practical recommendations based on your specific needs. Your plan may include:
- Meal recommendations
- Portion guidance
- Protein goals
- Fiber goals
- Carbohydrate recommendations
- Healthy-fat recommendations
- Meal timing
- Hydration
- Grocery guidance
- Restaurant strategies
- Snack ideas
- Food substitutions
- Supplement review
- Lifestyle recommendations
Step 4: Follow-Up & Monitoring
Nutrition counseling isn’t always a one-and-done appointment. Depending on your needs, follow-up visits may allow us to:
- Review progress
- Discuss challenges
- Review new laboratory results
- Adjust nutrition recommendations
- Modify calorie or protein goals
- Address new symptoms
- Work through barriers
- Expand your food choices
- Continue building sustainable habits
Your nutrition plan can evolve as your health and goals change.
Medical Nutrition Therapy for Specific Conditions
Medical Nutrition Therapy for Diabetes & Prediabetes
If you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes or prediabetes, MNT can help you better understand how nutrition fits into blood-sugar management. We may address:
- Carbohydrate portions
- Protein
- Fiber
- Meal composition
- Blood-sugar-friendly meals
- Weight management
- Physical activity
- Eating out
- Snack choices
- GLP-1 nutrition
You don’t necessarily need to eliminate carbohydrates. Instead, we’ll help you understand how different carbohydrate-containing foods can fit into a balanced eating pattern.
Medical Nutrition Therapy for Insulin Resistance
Insulin resistance can occur alongside:
- Prediabetes
- PCOS
- Type 2 diabetes
- Metabolic syndrome
- Fatty liver
- Weight gain
- Elevated triglycerides
Nutrition counseling may focus on improving overall metabolic health through:
- Protein
- Fiber
- Carbohydrate quality
- Portion awareness
- Healthy fats
- Physical activity
- Weight management when appropriate
The goal is to develop a sustainable approach rather than another restrictive diet.
Medical Nutrition Therapy for High Cholesterol
If your doctor has told you that your cholesterol or triglycerides are elevated, we can evaluate your overall eating pattern. Depending on your individual needs, we may address:
- Saturated fat
- Unsaturated fats
- Soluble fiber
- Fruits and vegetables
- Whole grains
- Protein sources
- Added sugars
- Alcohol
- Portion sizes
- Weight management
Rather than simply telling you what foods to avoid, we’ll focus on what you can add to your diet to support cardiovascular health.
Medical Nutrition Therapy for Weight Management
Weight management can be complicated by:
- Insulin resistance
- PCOS
- Diabetes
- Medications
- Menopause
- Lifestyle factors
- Sleep
- Stress
- Eating patterns
Your nutrition plan can be designed around your individual health and goals. Depending on your needs, we may focus on:
- Calorie intake
- Protein
- Fiber
- Meal composition
- Portion sizes
- Hunger and fullness
- Physical activity
- Strength training
- Body composition
- Long-term weight maintenance
Medical Nutrition Therapy for Digestive Conditions
Digestive symptoms can make eating feel stressful. MNT may help individuals dealing with:
- IBS
- Bloating
- Gas
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- SIBO
- GERD
- Food intolerances
Depending on your condition, nutrition counseling may include a structured elimination and reintroduction approach, low-FODMAP education, fiber adjustments, meal-timing strategies, or other individualized recommendations.
The goal is to avoid unnecessary restriction while helping you identify an eating pattern that supports your digestive health.
Medical Nutrition Therapy for Kidney Disease
Kidney disease can make nutrition particularly complicated. Depending on your stage of kidney disease and laboratory values, your nutrition plan may need to address:
- Protein
- Sodium
- Potassium
- Phosphorus
- Fluid
- Blood sugar
- Blood pressure
Kidney nutrition should be individualized based on your kidney function and medical care. Life Nutrition can help you understand how your dietary restrictions fit into an overall nutritious eating pattern.
Medical Nutrition Therapy for Fatty Liver
If you’ve been diagnosed with fatty liver disease or MASLD, nutrition and lifestyle can be important components of your overall management. Your individualized plan may address:
- Weight management when appropriate
- Added sugars
- Protein
- Fiber
- Healthy fats
- Alcohol intake
- Overall dietary quality
- Physical activity
- Insulin resistance
We’ll focus on sustainable changes rather than a temporary “liver cleanse” or fad diet.
Medical Nutrition Therapy & GLP-1 Medications
If you’re taking a GLP-1 medication, nutrition counseling can help you maintain adequate nutrition while your appetite and food intake change. We can work on:
- Protein intake
- Fiber
- Hydration
- Nutrient-dense foods
- Muscle preservation
- Meal composition
- Constipation
- Nausea and digestive concerns
- Long-term weight management
Your physician or other prescribing provider manages your medication. Your dietitian provides nutrition support that works alongside your medical treatment.
Why Work with a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist?
There is an enormous amount of nutrition information available online. Unfortunately, not all nutrition advice is accurate—or appropriate for someone with a medical condition.
A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist is a nutrition professional trained to provide individualized nutrition care based on evidence and your personal health needs.
Instead of following an influencer’s diet or a generic meal plan, you’ll have a nutrition professional who can help you determine:
What Should I Bring to My MNT Appointment?
If available, it can be helpful to bring:
- Recent laboratory results
- Medication list
- Supplement list
- Medical diagnoses
- Food allergy information
- Food logs
- Recommendations from your physician
- Your nutrition questions
- Your health and nutrition goals
You don’t need to have everything perfectly organized before your appointment. We’ll work through it together.
